Interior Design Tips: How to Break up the Monotony of a Room Using Color
A lot of people have a hard time deciding on the color to paint their room. Should they go with light colors or dark colors? What colors should they choose? How do you use color to break up the monotony in your life and make it more enjoyable?
Often the best route is to select a nice neutral paint color for the walls - we love Farrow & Ball neutrals such as Skimming Stone, Mouse's Back or Elephant’s Breath to create a soft envelope of neutral color then liven it up with fun pops of color and textures with fabrics furnishings and art.
Exactly why McCaffery Design Group loves to play around with bold, highly saturated colors to break up a monochromatic color palette and add spunk and personality to the whole room.
A Burst of Pink in Neutral Setting
In this library where the McCaffery Design team painted the walls in ecru tones with a matte finish and decked the custom built-ins and square ottomans in similar neutral tones. There’s a break in monotony with the dark grey peeking out - thanks to an elegant floor lamp.
The dark hues in the fireplace and window trims help balance the neutral colors and warm grey. However, a dual-tone room would still be lackluster.
Here, it’s the gorgeous, unapologetically bold pink that ties the whole room together. With the sorbet on the custom sofas in luscious mohair, the McCaffery Design team created an environment that is both chic and comfortable without feeling like it is trying too hard.
2. Bold Colors over white
The beauty of playing with monochromatic color palettes is that there’s no one way to do it. You can take any room and dress it in a color of your choice with a central element that keeps the room from feeling bland and gloomy.
Here, the McCaffery Design team turned to everyone’s favorite room in the house; the kitchen. Keeping the cabinetry in a classic, calm white with nickel hardware allowed for a bold, pop of color over something of a blank canvas.
A play on textures of white in the room came from the custom cabinetry details veining in the white marble countertops. All these preludes create the perfect backdrop for the star of the show, the client’s desire for a little surprise in the kitchen; the bold, blue La Cornue, complemented beautifully by the faucet in live brass finish.
3. Creating A Calm Space with Sky Blue
A monochromatic palette offers a lot of creativity.
You can be as impactful as you dare with rich, dark colors, or keep it subtle with neural tones. But a lot of people find it incredibly daunting to mess around with bold colors. For those who worry about the result, relax! You can always start small and work within the confines of a bathroom before moving onto a larger room in your house. The way we’ve designed this particular bathroom is an excellent example of what we can do with a minimalistic color palette.
The bathroom was designed in all white with complimentary marble shower and vanity stone.
In a bid to merge functionality with a sleek and modern design, the McCaffery Design team added nickel hardware. The sconces add to the overall mood of a classic, suburban bathroom with nickel fixtures polished to a high sheen and white conical shades. The element that adds a bit of whimsy is the framed mirror in light blue. The blue hue brings about a cooling, calming effect and compliments the whites of the bathroom.
